Prague Castle

Prague Castle is the most important Czech historical monument and cultural institution. From the 9th century it had been the seat of Bohemian dukes, and later kings, and since 1918 it has been the seat of the President of Czechoslovakia/Czech Republic. The Castle was most likely founded around 880 by Duke Bořivoj, the founder of the Přemyslid dynasty.

Through numerous extensions and changes, Prague Castle has become one of the largest medieval castles in the world. According to the Guinness World Records, Prague Castle is the largest castle complex in the world, occupying almost 70,000 m2. It is also listed as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site.

The Castle consists of an extensive complex of religious structures and palaces built in various architectural styles, the oldest being Romanesque structures from the 10th century. Currently, the following parts of the Castle may be visited:

  • Old Royal Palace – permanent exhibition The Story of the Prague Castle
  • St. George’s Basilica – St. Vitus Treasure exposition
  • Golden Lane
  • Castle’s Picture Gallery
  • Powder Tower
  • Rožmberk Palace
  • Cathedral’s big south tower
  • St. Vitus Cathedral, a traditional coronation as well as burial place of kings of Bohemia, holding also the Crown Jewels

The representative parts of Prague Castle, normally closed for public, may be usually visited on the first Saturday after 8 May.

The Prague Castle complex is open daily:

1 Apr – 31 Oct from 5 am to midnight
1 Nov – 31 Mar from 6 am to 11 pm

Structures accessible to public are open daily, except for 24 Dec (does not apply to the Cathedral):

1 Apr – 31 Oct from 9 am to 5 pm
1 Nov – 31 Mar from 9 am to 4 pm

Prague Castle is guarded by the Castle Guard; ceremonial guard-changing with fanfares takes place daily at 12.00 on the First Courtyard.

Guard-changing at the posts takes place:

In the summer season every full hour from 7 am to 8 pm
In the winter season every full hour from 7 am to 6 pm
