Charles Bridge celebrated 660 years

Date: 13.7.2017
The King of Bohemia and the Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire Charles IV. believed in numerology and therefore the first stone of Charles Bridge was set in the morning of July 9, 1357 at 5:31 am which was carefully chosen by Charles’ numerologist. Writing the date down in numerical sequence, you will get - 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 7, 5, 3, 1.

The King of Bohemia and the Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire Charles IV. knew five languages, he was a very skilled diplomat and a brave warrior. As a future Emperor, in 1348 he decided to make Prague the capital city of Europe.

He founded the New Town of Prague, opened the University, continued building the St. Vitus Cathedral and rebuilt the Judith Bridge (demolished by flood) which became today's Charles Bridge – bigger and more beautiful.

Charles Bridge connects the Old Town with the Lesser Town, it is 515 meters long and 9,5 meters wide. It consists of sixteen arches and three towers: in the Lesser Town, there is a larger and a smaller tower (Lesser Town Towers) and on the side of the Old Town there is the Old Town Bridge Tower. Charles Bridge is the famous open-air gallery of thirty predominantly Baroque sculptures and sculptural groups.

Nowadays, Charles Bridge is an essential dominant of Prague and the most photographed place in Prague, with Prague Castle in the background. It is an attractive tourist and historical place, the centre of meetings, relaxing and exploring the beauties and views of the Prague panorama.
